As I am writing this I am awaiting a cold snap, to hit tonight and tomorrow, which, in all likelihood, will be the coldest the winter gets this year. We’ve already cancelled choir and handbell practice for tonight, and I’m watching with interest as various things in the community start to shut down as well.
Times like this are interesting for a number of reasons. Certain issues become more paramount; making sure people have shelter, and warmth, becomes more important. Social unrest tends to die down because it’s hard to stay out in the elements for either the establishment or those protesting it. Folks pack in, stay home, if they have somewhere safe to do so.
It reminds me somewhat of the flood, or any other time when the weather put a stop to everything and forced humanity to take a look at what we were doing, how we were doing it, just by making us stop… even if only for a moment. Life goes on in our busy world, and by the time you receive this the cold snap will be over and life will have resumed, the good and the bad.
So take advantage of these times when the world around us forces us to stop. Take the time to think. To adjust. To reconsider. And then, when the pause button gets released… be ready to continue doing Justice, loving Kindness, and walking Humbly with our God.
