I am currently preparing to attend Presbyterian General Assembly this
summer. This will be the third time I have attended the Assembly and my
first time going as a delegate, representing our Presbytery at the National
Church.
I love General Assembly because no one goes on accident. No one is there
because “well, I guess I have to.” Often there is a waiting list to go, though
the wait in John Knox was relatively small… last GA I was the alternate. (It
is possible that the reason this one was so easy for me to get to is the fact
that it is in Milwaukee which isn’t very exciting for Wisconsinites.)
The last one I attended, Rose was a delegate, and I got to see how some of
the sausage got made. It was pretty exciting… there were actual back
hallways walk and talks where people from one committee or org would
chat with another in an unofficial capacity to help along different ideas or
pitch different possibilities. I don’t know what that looks like in the age of a
hybrid assembly, when the committee portion happens virtually. I look
forward to finding out.
It’s also some of the best congregational singing you’ll ever hear. I have
become convinced that no worshipping group sings quite like a large room
of people being Presbyterian on Purpose. I’ll bring back stories afterwards.
It’s gonna be a good time. A worshipful time. And a tiring one. Have
patience with me when I get back!
Pastor Dan
